Zakopane Has a New Attraction, and Residents Complain. "You Can Hear It from a Distance"

Large melexes have appeared on the streets of Zakopane. These vehicles have no windows, so tourists can admire the city from a really close distance. Theoretically, they are an alternative to horse-drawn carriages criticized by animal welfare organizations , but residents are not convinced by this type of attraction. It's all because of the music that carries from the speakers even in the evening. "Such noises interfere with normal functioning or relaxation," complains one of the Zakopane residents in a letter to Tygodnik Podhalański.

Meleks in Zakopane have opponents

They run non-stop and generate noise – this is how some residents describe the new melexes that have appeared in Zakopane. They take tourists from hotels and apartments to the biggest attractions, but also to events organized in the center of Krupówki. The groups' journeys are accompanied by loud music, which would not be a problem if the windows in these means of transport remained closed at that time. However, the trip takes place "in the open air", and the noise penetrates from the street directly to the windows of Zakopane's houses. "Is this another attraction of our city, which someone introduced solely to make money from it, without considering the residents, tourists and other people who are disturbed by such noise in their normal functioning or relaxation?" – writes one of the dissatisfied residents in an emotional letter to the regional editorial office.

Zakopane's image crisis

This is another attraction that affects how the city is perceived by tourists themselves. Although rides in loud electric cars may be great fun for some, many Poles came to Zakopane not so long ago to take a break from the daily grind of the city. Unfortunately, the popular Tatra resort has been going through an image crisis for several years, which even the city authorities themselves are talking about.
